The New Google Desktop program (Worth a look-see)

Google Desktop is a very, VERY useful application that can help you find documents on your computer using the power of Google's search engine.

In other words, that poem you wrote in your senior year of college and filed away in a deep, dark hole on your hard drive? You'll be able to find it. How about that spreadsheet with your budget from 1997? Yep, you'll be able to find that too. Emails from Grandma, family reunion pictures from last summer, and your shopping list for Uncle Bob's birthday party? You guessed it - you'll be able to find it. Basically, Google Desktop is my right-hand man; I know that no matter how, uh, "creatively" I might file something away on my 'puter, Google Desktop will be able to find it. It's an indispensable tool.

Solve Network Connection Problems

WIRELESS NETWORKS are almost anywhere you want to be. You can go to your local coffee shop, library, or pizzeria and get a high-quality signal so you’re never out of touch. But what happens if you can’t connect? It is a common, and frankly annoying, complication of an otherwise fantastic system. Below, we’re going to cover a few of the more common problems and how to fix them. As an added bonus, not only will we provide answers for Windows XP users, but we’ll also provide answers for Microsoft’s newest OS, Windows Vista.

View & Connect To Available Wireless Networks

The first step to getting online with a wireless network is to choose the appropriate network for your location. If you’re using WinXP, you’ll need to find a list of the wireless networks within range of your computer. To check, click Start, Control Panel, and Network Connections. Here you’ll find a list of all of the possible connectivity options on your computer. Right-click the icon for your wireless network connection and click View Available Wireless Networks. This will take you to a list of all available networks and their respective signal strengths.

If you’re using Windows Vista, the procedure is similar, but the names are different. Click Start, Control Panel, Network And Internet, and Manage

Wireless Networks. This will bring up a list of available networks similar to the one described above for WinXP. Select the appropriate network and click Connect. With either Vista or WinXP, you’ll be able to preferentially connect to a given network by moving a network up or down on the preferred network list on the Wireless Network Connection Properties win....

Alert from Dave “Doc” Dockery

(President of Tampa Bay Computer Society)

Extortion-Ware
Please be careful downloading "FREE" software.  Many programs install
spyware or worse.  Weather Bug & Incredi-Mail are two of these.  They may
seem cute and/or useful, but they also report your surfing habits back
"home" so that they can target advertising to your computer.

A new breed of spyware annoys you with pop-ups asking for money in order to
uninstall it - WOW!  PopCorn.net (also known as Movieland & Moviepass)
supposedly lets you watch movies online.  It offers a 3-day free-trial
download after which it takes over your computer and displays pop-ups to
keep reminding you that payment is due following the trial.  If you load
this bad boy on your 'puter, it is VERY difficult to remove.  Here's a
source that includes a link to a removal tool:
